3D printer made from e-waste in Africa

home made 3d printerA man in West Africa created a 3D printer from e-waste he scavenged from local sources. Afate Gnikou of Togo used parts from old computers, scanners, and other e-waste to build what is thought to be the first 3D printer made mostly from discarded electronic items. The 33-year-old, who makes a living repairing cellphones and computers in his neighbourhood, says he believes this model is only the prototype for something much larger.

This young inventor spent just $100 along with re-purpoused e-waste to build this amazing device.  His 3D printer own the prestigious NASA International Space Apps Challenge in Paris.

Mr. Gnikou named the device W.Afate taking the name from the first letter of the  hackerspace WoeLab he is a member of and his first name.

In the future, it is hoped that the device will run on solar power and use recycled plastic filaments.
